What You Need To Know About Car Battery Replacement

What You Need To Know About Car Battery Replacement

When your car’s battery stops working, you’re not going anywhere until you get a car battery replacement, so it is important to know how they work.

Car Batteries

Your car’s battery powers the electronic features of your automobile. If you drive an electric vehicle, that includes everything. If you drive a gas-powered vehicle, this includes your headlights, your dashboard lights, your car radio, and so on.

If you leave your headlights on for hours while your vehicle isn’t running, you are likely to drain your battery. Sometimes you can reinvigorate your battery with jumper cables and another battery. Sometimes you must replace your battery.

It’s common to go through a few batteries over the course of a vehicle’s lifetime. But when you replace a battery, should you pick the same brand and model of battery that you had before, or a different one? It depends.

Choosing The Right Car Battery

When it comes time to replace your battery, it’s natural to be attracted to the least expensive option. But buying the cheapest battery might cost you more money in the long run. A car battery with higher battery capacity, longer battery life, and a long battery warranty usually costs more. Even so, such a battery is likely to last longer and offer better performance.

What To Look For In A Car Battery

A good replacement battery is one that:

  • Sits flush in the battery tray. Ill-fitting batteries can get damaged from excess vibration.
  • Meets or exceeds the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating suggested in your car owner’s manual.
  • Has sufficient Reserve Capacity (RC). This determines how long electrical accessories can operate while preserving enough power to start your engine.
  • Offers high capacity. This is especially important for driving in the extreme cold, which Ontarian drivers typically do several times every winter. The more the temperature drops below freezing, the less effective a car battery’s performance becomes. For example, if a battery operates at 100% of its cranking power at +27ºC, by the time the temperature drops to -18ºC, it will have lost about 40% of its power.

Important To Note

The modern automobile is much more efficient than previous generations of cars. However, it can also be a lot harder on its batteries. This is due to all the internal systems in modern vehicles.

That’s why it’s worthwhile to schedule routine battery maintenance and to have your battery inspected, along with your vehicle’s electronic functions. Heat can also be bad for batteries, as can running the AC all summer.
